The X-Files: 20 Best Introductory Episodes

3. Elegy (Season 4, Episode 22)

X Files Elegy "I know what you're afraid of. I'm afraid of the same thing." - Fox Mulder
"Elegy," one of the final episodes of Season 4, follows the case of a serial killer whose victims appear via apparition to others just at the time of their deaths. With their only credible source a harassed autistic man living in a care facility along with a rising death toll, Scully and Mulder must find a way to shelve their own troubles before more young women die. Where "Small Potatoes" is funny and comparatively light, "Elegy" is a much darker and more emotionally-charged episode. The nature of the case forces skeptical Scully to consider a truly paranormal explanation, and Mulder may be too preoccupied to realize that something is very wrong with her. Featuring some wonderful guest stars, this MOTW episode can be connected back to "Memento Mori" but watched alone without any difficulty. It's extremely well-balanced, and certainly worth the watch.
