Titans: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Jason Todd
8. We Need To Talk About Felipe
Jason has always been a rebellious character, but perhaps his most shocking moment (during his original stint as Robin) was his ambiguous involvement in the death of serial rapist Felipe Garzonas.
Although arrested for his crimes against women, Felipe was able to escape prosecution due to his father’s diplomatic immunity. This miscarriage of justice just didn’t sit well with Batman’s increasingly-violent partner and, after Jason discovered that one of the criminal's previous victims committed suicide out of fear that she would be targeted once again, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Enraged, Jason showed up alone outside Felipe's apartment, catching the criminal off-guard as he cornered him on the balcony. By the time that Batman eventually arrived, he could only watch as Felipe fell to his death.
He then questioned his partner over the circumstances of his fall, asking him if Felipe actually fell or if he was pushed. However, Jason maintained that the criminal merely slipped. The events that occurred were never revealed, purposely leaving Felipe’s death ambiguous.
Undoubtedly one of the most controversial storylines that he was ever involved in, it was perhaps somewhat overshadowed by the fact that it occurred so close to Jason’s own death.
