Titans Season 2: 4 Ups & 2 Downs From ‘Conner’

1. Superboy's Origins Retold Well

Titans PBS

PBSIt goes without saying that the best thing about the entire episode was its exceptional handling of Conner Kent's origin story. Given the character's history in both the comics and Young Justice, Conner's story on Titans was always going to be a compelling one, but the writers managed to reinvent it in a way that was both loyal to the comics, and completely unique to the relatively grim world of the show.

The early revelation that Conner has the maturity levels of a two-year old added a layer of urgency to the episode as, in spite of the fact that we wanted to root for him, we also found ourselves on the edges of our seats hoping that he wouldn't do anything he would regret. And yet the hopeful optimism with which he saw the world for the first time couldn't help but make us grow more and more attached to him.

Like Dr. Eve Watson, we as viewers found ourselves conflicted because we wanted for him to succeed and find the Titans more than anything, and yet we knew that he needed someone to keep him in-line until he did - the reason being that we knew he could be like Superman if he wanted to be, and yet we were constantly afraid that he would behave like Dad #2: Lex Luthor. And that's where Dr. Watson came in as, together, the pair provided each other with something that they needed, and this overall theme of redemption (alongside two great performances from Joshua Orpin and Genevieve Angelson anchored an exceptionally-written character study.
