13. Some Mothers Do €™Ave €™Em €“ Jessica€™s First Christmas (BBC, 1974)

Frank desperately tries to get a part in the church Nativity play, despite Father O€™Hara€™s efforts to stop him. Christmas just offers a multitude of new ways for well-intentioned walking catastrophe Frank Spencer to cause chaos. The physical comedy is spot on and the verbal humour also hits the mark, particularly with Michele Dotrice (Betty) acting as the straight man (although she gets a few decent quips in) to Frank strange ramblings like worrying that his baby daughter playing Jesus will cause her to become a lesbian. The episode boasts some very daring stuntwork and, as always, Michael Crawford€™s (Frank) performance is sublime. It€™s nothing groundbreaking but it€™s good fun and it doesn€™t feel like there€™s too little material for its extended runtime. Best Moment: Frank€™s winch mechanism for the Nativity play catapulting him through the church roof.
