8. Up: Cast & Voice Acting
The series advertises both English and Tagalog casts, with both doing a fantastic job bringing characters to life. The Filipino cast is star-studded, with famous Filipina actress Liza Soberano playing the titular Trese.
The original English cast is largely made up of actors of Filipino descent. Some notable players include Shay Mitchell of Pretty Little Liars fame as Trese, with Manny Jacinto of The Good Place playing fan-favourite character Maliksi and Eric Bauza - best known for being the current actor playing most of the Looney Tunes - as the snitch Nuno Sa Manhole (dwarf in the manhole).
Some surprise cast members that weren't announced include Sumalee Montano, known for her video game roles in Ghost of Tsushima and Dragon Age Inquisition, as well as Deedee Magno-Hall, who played Pearl in Steven Universe.
Unique to most anime, even on Netflix, is how the actors portray English in a Filipino accent, which adds to the unique and grounded feel of the series in its setting - even with notable actors not of Filipino descent, such as Steve Blum, the original English dub voice of Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop, as well as a plethora of other animated roles.
