True Detective Season 2: 10 Big Questions From Episode 1

10. What's With The Leonard Cohen Theme?

Season 2's credit sequence predictably maintains the dark atmosphere of its predecessor. Leonard Cohen's signature gravelly spoken word song and the distinctive visuals (featuring the season's distinctive California landscape melting into the faces of the main characters) kick things off in fittingly moody fashion. However, did anybody really expect the song itself to be so... funky? It bounces along on a pulsing bassline, Cohen's vocals backed up by a chorus of airy female voices. Nevermind carries a threatening undertone in its rumbling nature, but could certainly be a lot darker. It's an unusual choice, especially as Season 1's Far From Any Road was just as rustic and menacing as the episodes themselves. Questions Raised: How relevant will Cohen's lyrics be in the long run? Particularly the line "I live among you / Well disguised".
