True Detective Season 2 - 10 Reasons It's A Huge Disappointment

1. It All Feels Like A Threadbare Version Of Season One

So far this season, we've seen main characters who have exceedingly dark pasts, highly quotable lines that teeter on the line between enlightening and nonsensical, and a grand murder mystery. Unfortunately, this description of season two can be used to describe season one with almost no alterations, and that's a big problem. Season two was touted as being completely different, with a new story and new characters, in a new setting. Beneath the surface however, it all feels like deja vu. The main characters in both seasons are dark, troubled, and sprout pseudo-philosophical garbage, and the new Los Angeles setting is just as macabre, dank and dangerous as season one's Louisiana - albeit far less interesting. Even the main mystery in season two is following similar story beats to the Yellow King. The first few episodes jumpstart the mystery, introduces all the characters and establishes everyone's place in the story. There's a mid-season climatic battle that seemingly closes the mystery, (season one with Reggie Ledoux and the swamp fight, season two with the gun fight in the street). Lastly, a time jump occurs and the mystery is reopened due to new evidence and each character is seemingly going through even more personal troubles. Very 'different' indeed. After all the hype for season two, please let there not be a third. How have you found this season? Is the criticism unfounded, or justified? Let us know in the comments!

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
