True Detective Season 2 - 10 Reasons It's A Huge Disappointment

9. The Main Murder Mystery Is WAY Too Convoluted

The season is nearly over, so let's recap what is presumably going on. Frank entered into a deal with Caspere to go legit which involves a high-speed rail deal. Caspere is mysteriously killed, Frank loses his money and the three main detectives are put on the case. Ray finds Caspere's secret second home that's filled with weird masks and a mysterious hard drive, which is subsequently stolen. The Mayor is then somehow linked to Caspere's murder before it is revealed that Caspre is linked to some film deal and vast amounts of contaminated mining land. The detectives discover some prostitute is pawning all of Caspere's stuff, which leads to a massive shoot-out, which leads to the case being shut down. Months later, the case is reopened because of some tenuous links between the contaminated lands, the hard drive, Caspere's stolen stuff, and Ani's missing person case. Finally, it is revealed that Caspere and the Mayor were involved with supplying young women for orgies thrown by influential men, and the contaminated lands, the rail deal, the hard drive, and the weird masks are all somehow tied to all of this. How does all this make any sense? It wouldn't be so bad if the mystery had coherent moving pieces that are entertaining instead of excessive random characters, storylines, and McGuffins that make connecting the dots nearly impossible.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem.
