True Detective Season 2 - 10 Reasons It's A Huge Disappointment
3. The Three Detectives Are Just Not Interesting
Without the interactions between the three detectives to entertain audiences, it is up to the backstories and lives of each individual main character to compensate. Sadly, each is about as interesting as a slice of bread. Ray is wrestling with being corrupt, his wife's rape, and the fact that his kid probably isn't his kid. Ani's family is a bunch of messed up hippies which resulted in her possible assault at a young age, and Paul is a war veteran who wrestles with his sexuality and his relationships with his mother and girlfriend. Basically, all three detectives have dark and messed up pasts, all three are socially flawed, and all three are self-destructive. All that wouldn't be so bad if they could at least pull off some engaging dialogue that would hook people in, but unfortunately, the writing is almost all expository. Whereas there was method to Cohle's madness - attempts at deepening and developing Ray - Ani, and Paul don't go beyond showing how boring and one-note each character is.
My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem.
Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh.
