True Detective Season 3: 8 Ways It's Saved The Show

7. A Great Supporting Cast

True Detective
HBO

Remember Taylor Kitsch’s story from True Detective season 2? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one.

While McConaughey was the star of the first series, Woody Harrelson backed him up brilliantly, with the two carving out a fantastic dynamic built off the real life friendship they had for years. In Season 2, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams (to a certain extent, Vince Vaughn and Kitsch too) all did a decent enough job on their own, but it never really came together.

Season 3 has seen a return to the charm of the first, with Stephen Dorff putting in a career-best performance as Hays’ partner, Roland. Dorff was a star very much on the wane, thought by most people to have faded forever, but True Detective has offered a rebirth.

Added to the fantastic work by the two leads, Scoot McNairy has evolved from background meth head into a credible star. Carmen Ejogo, Mamie Gummer and Michael Graziadei (Amelia, Lucy and Dan respectively) have all shone in their moments; Ejogo especially seems to always have some intrigue simmering away.

Everyone has brought something to the table this year, and the quality is there for all to see.
