True Detective Season 3: 8 Ways To Fix The Show

4. One Director

HBO

As well as McConaughey and Harrelson, one of the major reasons behind the success of the first season was the vision of director Cary Fukunaga, who took on the task of directing all eight episodes and created something really special. He really established the look and feel of the show, never letting it drag its feet, always finding something interesting to put on the screen, and helping to cover up any flaws in Pizzolatto's writing.

For the second season there was a team of different directors brought in, meaning that there wasn't one overall style or vision for the show. The likes of Jeremy David Attias and Miguel Sapochnik are clearly talented directors, with some great work on their CV, and it'd be really interesting to see what they would have brought over an entire run. Instead it felt nowhere near as tight and cohesive a piece of work, and suffered as a result.

Given that Fukunaga and Pizzolatto reportedly had a big falling out, plus the fact he's now a pretty in-demand director, it's a safe bet he won't be back, but having one person to come in and help control the direction of the show would be a massive bonus for Season 3.
