Overall, it looks and sounds like True Detective Season 3 is a return to the form of Season 1 for the show, and that's more or less been confirmed by the handful of early reviews that have made their way online ahead of the premiere.

Season 3 currently sits on 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 87% for Season 1 and 63% for Season 2, with an average rating of 7.3/10. It's a similar story on Metacritic, with 71/10, compared to 87 and 61 for Seasons 1 & 2 respectively.

A lot of the early praise goes, predictably, to Ali's performance, with the critical consensus on RT being: "Driven by Mahershala Ali's mesmerizing performance, True Detective's third season finds fresh perspective by exploring real-world events -- though it loses some of the series' intriguing strangeness along the way."

It was always going to be hard for the show to fully recapture the magic of Season 1 but, based on everything we know, it sounds like it does a good job of coming close.
