TV Review: Castle 5.13, "Recoil"

castle-recoil-9-bracken-beckett-jack-coleman-stana-katic-abc-thumb-315xauto-51420 Senator Bracken. Powerful, connected. Political opportunist. Responsible for the deaths of Captain Montgomery and Detective Beckett€™s mother. And now, the target of an assassination, with only Kate Beckett standing between life and death. This week gave the viewers of Castle views into what Beckett is willing to do to avenge her mother€™s murder. Would she be willing to kill? Or would it be even easier to sit and watch a killer die? Senator Bracken€™s aide (and possible mistress) is killed and dumped in a trash can and set ablaze. When Beckett and Castle start to investigate, it€™s discovered that Bracken isn€™t the villain in this particular episode, but the victim. Detective Beckett is still the lead detective on the case €“ (€œUnless, Senator, you have any reason why Detective Beckett shouldn€™t be on the case?) €“ and struggles with why she shouldn€™t just let this man kill the senator. In typical fashion, Beckett chooses the ideals of justice above that of a personal vendetta, saving Bracken from a car bomb and propelling him to the national stage. The issue at large in €œRecoil€ is whether or not to give into the lesser of two evils. Senator Bracken is scum, plain and simple. Powerful scum, and by the end of the episode is poised to be a great mover and shaker as a senator, possibly even make a presidential run. But giving into this evil, even for a second, makes Beckett realize reasons to fight for justice in this moment, pure and vain. For the episode, she fought to prevent a car bomb, the loss of civilian life, and truth, justice and the American way. Afterwards, Beckett let herself feel another reason she saved Bracken. She wants to get Bracken herself, and whether or not that means blood is still up for discussion. This was an episode for Detective Beckett, but the audience saw flashes of just how Castle is able to reach within himself to find the macabre. After Senator Bracken is saved, he has a short talk with Castle about Beckett. Castle€™s response: €œI wouldn€™t have done it, you know, what she did. I€™d have stood and watched.€ Bracken is pushing everybody to the edge. Leaves us all wondering who is going to crack first. Agree or Disagree? Let's discuss! Please comment below.
