Vikings: 7 Surprising Facts About The Real Bjorn Ironside
2. Bjorn Was Never A Lothbrok
Here’s something that the show gets VERY wrong when it comes to the sons of Ragnar. During the time period depicted by the show surnames weren’t exactly a thing yet, instead people had nicknames to help identify them, for example Ironside literally meant ‘sides like iron’ referring to Bjorns incredible bear like strength, and Lothbrok meant something along the lines of ‘he who wears baggy trousers’.
With that in mind it is hard to understand why the show-writers relentlessly refer to the sons of Ragnar as Bjorn Lothbrok or Ivar Lothbrok… unless they all happened to be wearing baggy trousers people would instead refer to them as Ragnarsson – the son of Ragnar.
