1. Athelstan’s Crucifixion

As mentioned earlier, Athelstan quickly became a fan favorite and no one expected him to suffer this fate. During a failed battle against the Saxons, Athelstan is eventually captured, but at that point we do not learn his fate now as the scene ends and cuts to other characters.

Eventually when we come back to our dear friend Athelstan, he is already in the process of being crucified. The scene is very brutal as the nailing to the cross is shown and he is even given a crown of thorns.

This was such a shock to viewers because there was no warning (he was threatened with it, but we all ignored it). One moment he is sitting in a field surrounded by enemies that were once his people and the next he is being nailed to a cross and strung up.

Throughout the show he was a character that we all rooted for and never expected to be put through something so brutal. At the end of it he is saved by King Egbert as are us fans of the character.
