Written by: Channing Powell Directed by: David Boyd Tension in The Walking Dead has really suffered for not being an anthology show. Since midway through season two, once the main cast had been boiled down to the essentials, the audience has become more and more sure of which characters are safe and which are Walker-bait. There is no catching us by surprise anymore, because we know not everyone is as expendable as AMC would like us to believe. This is the episode that made the main characters vulnerable again. True, none of them die, but the combination of virus and zombie outbreak is the most well-executed action sequence the series has ever created. The climax of this episode is enough to put it on the list on its own merits, because it pulls out all the stops on the Virus scenario and just allows everything to go to hell, with Glenn's life in the balance. Not only is this the first episode in which the walkers are threatening since the beginning of Season 3, it represents a major milestone necessary for the arc of season 4: It establishes that Rick's band of survivors has what it takes to handle more than just the occasional walker attack - between Rick and Carl finally coming together and Hershel's renewed strength, there is much in this episode to keep you on the edge of your seat.
