The Walking Dead: 5 Characters Most Likely To Die Next
3. Beth Greene
Why She Could Be Next: Prior to Season 4, Beth Greene was not much of a presence on The Walking Dead. Even the first half mostly had her relegated to taking care of baby Judith in the background. She was getting more attention than in the previous two years, yes, but she still wasn't quite a main character. Then, in the midseason finale, she fled the prison with none other than Daryl, and everything changed. In her past three episodes, she has gotten more lines and screen time than she did over her first two and a half seasons combined. Beth became a real character, managing to develop a deep intimacy with the emotional mess that is Daryl Dixon and basically become his reason for continued existence. Love her or hate her, there's no denying that Beth has been the driving force of one of the most prominent plots of the second half of the season. So basically, she doesn't have the greatest odds of survival. As Dale, T-Dog, and Hershel would be able to attest, secondary characters who suddenly receive a boost in attention often don't live long enough to wear out their welcome among the main players. Furthermore, AMC seems to have an aversion to Daryl being too happy for too long, so it's entirely possible that Beth's arc in Season 4 has been more about heaping extra misery onto Daryl than developing her character. Not to mention all of the rather dire foreshadowing. Beth repeatedly insists that she can take care of herself. She refers to herself as just "another dead girl" in Daryl's eyes and goes on to list all of the reasons why she should not have made it as far as she has. "You're going to miss me so bad when I'm gone," she says. Well, she wasn't wrong about that. We now must wonder how many of her other predictions will be coming true by the finale. Why She Has A Chance: The Walking Dead may have a pattern of killing off characters immediately after making us care about them, but Beth may not fit the mould. Other deaths have occurred when the characters were an ensemble; as things are now, nobody except for Daryl even knows that she left the prison alive. For Maggie or any of the others to learn secondhand of Beth's death would lack the impact of Dale's or Hershel's (although Daryl would probably never recover). Besides, for all we know, Beth was scooped up by a well-intentioned passerby who wanted to save her from the screaming redneck chasing after her with a crossbow. Okay, maybe not, but it sure beats thinking about what else could be happening to her.
Fiction buff and writer. If it's on Netflix, it's probably in my queue. I've bought DVDs for the special features and usually claim that the book is better than the movie or show (and can provide examples). I've never met a TV show that I won't marathon. Follow on Twitter @lah9891 .
