The Walking Dead: 6 Things That "Alone" Did Right (And 3 It Didn't)
2. Action Sequences
One area in which The Walking Dead has always excelled is the zombie action. While the first half of Season 4 had a greater emphasis on the threats posed by infection and other survivors, the second half has been making up for it, and "Alone" gave us some pretty entertaining examples. First off, the scene where Maggie, Sasha, and Bob are surrounded by snarling Walkers in the fog was one of the scariest that we've seen in quite some time. A good part of the terror drew from the knowledge that there was nothing for them to do but wait. Usually, the survivors at least have the options of fight or flight. In the fog, there was no attack to mount and no place to hide; as Sasha said, it was only by pure luck that they were able to fight their way out. Second comes from the horde that swarmed Daryl in the funeral home. Overlooking for a moment that he should have known better than to open the door without checking outside, the softened Daryl of the earlier part of "Alone" transforms back into the badass killing machine that we all know and love. Watching him fight off a dozen Walkers in the tiny basement mortuary with only a pair of handheld embalming tools was uncomfortably harrowing, and considering all of the foreshadowing that has been looming over both Daryl and Beth lately--we had to wonder if maybe he wouldn't make it out this time. Finally, there was Maggie's and Sasha's battle against a horde that appeared out of nowhere in an abandoned town. Sasha was stabbing Walkers in the face with a spear. Maggie was decapitating Walkers with a rusty sign. Women other than Michonne were holding their own in a fight without needing to be rescued. Yeah, it was pretty great.
Fiction buff and writer. If it's on Netflix, it's probably in my queue. I've bought DVDs for the special features and usually claim that the book is better than the movie or show (and can provide examples). I've never met a TV show that I won't marathon. Follow on Twitter @lah9891 .
