The Walking Dead: 6 Things "Coda" Got Right (And 4 It Didn't)
3. Some Truly Terrible CGI
The budget for TV shows is getting kind of ridiculous (seriously, you should see the amount of scratch they come up with for a single episode of Game Of Thrones), but the gulf between television and movie productions has never been more obvious than in the use of CGI in this episode of The Walking Dead. Refreshingly, in a world that leans a little too heavily on the digital for its special effects the show mostly relies on practical stunts like make up, maquettes, all that old-school stuff. Ably provided by the team who worked on the likes of Day Of The Dead, no less. The walkers have never been anything less than consistently creepy. Killing them is a different matter. Some of the most powerfully horrific moments have come from a gore-filled zombie being dealt with, whether with a boot hell, bullet, or bare hands. This season has seen the undead become a lot less threatening, but that isn't really an issue in Coda the focus is entirely on getting Carol and Beth back, regardless of who's standing in the way so much as the manner in which they're dispatched. There's a bunch of truly awful CGI used for almost every walker that gets killed in this week's episode, with their heads being lopped off and stomachs slashed open to reveal vital organs that look like they were rendered on a Playstation 2. If you're going to do CGI, do it properly if you can't afford it, don't bother. It looks really, really cheap.
