2. Remember The Walkers

The human drama is the real draw of The Walking Dead, but tensions wouldn't be running so high in the first place were it not for the hordes of flesh-eating zombies that were roaming the Earth and making swift meals of every living person they come across. That does tend to make people a little more stressed out, prone to arguments and Mexican stand-offs, that sort of thing. Another part of genius pacing in Slabtown was to slowly reveal the horror of the settlement Beth had been dragged to, so that you almost forgot why they were ten floors up, and all those injured people kept rolling in. Dr Edwards was mostly a source of relief for Beth throughout the episode, but he was all too aware of the awful situation that humanity had found themselves in. Apparently that€™s the only way he can deal with the terrible way his life is lead, with a survival-of-the-fittest attitude and debts being hung over everybody€™s head: by reminding himself that outside is so, so much worse. The scene where he takes Beth down to the rattling gates not only reminded her but the audiences that, whilst the human characters cause plenty of drama, there€™s still all those walkers to contend with too...
