The Walking Dead: 7 Reasons Why 'After' Was The Perfect Premiere

6. Small Questions Answered

In The Walking Dead, there are always big questions that will require big answers. As of the end of the first 9 episodes of the fourth season, however, there seem to be more mysteries that there is time left to solve. Those of us who cared about the rats still don't know who was killing them. Those of us who want proof one way or another still don't know what happened to baby Judith. Those who subscribe to the theory that Carol didn't murder Karen and David still do not know the identity of the true killer. Those of us who do think she did it still don't know how Tyreese will react to her guilt. Indeed, there are plenty of dangling plot threads that were not even mentioned in this episode. Fortunately, there were a few of those niggling questions that would have invited theorising for the next seven episodes that were definitively answered. Most importantly, we see for ourselves that the Governor is, in fact, dead. Dead and not coming back. Dead, dead, dead. While there had been little room for doubt, the fact that we didn't actually see his death sparked speculation among the more jaded fans that he somehow survived. Fortunately, he was confirmed as 100% dead. Unless he's sleeping in that walker-infested courtyard, somehow. That'd be ridiculous. Furthermore, we saw exactly what happened to Hershel's head. As his death in "Too Far Gone" had been via decapitation, viewers couldn't help but wonder if his head was still chomping around in the grass somewhere. Admittedly, this felt like a relatively small question in the grand scheme of Season 4, but the ball wasn't dropped in 'After,' as Michonne discovered Hershel's reanimated head and put him down accordingly. It's the little things. Finally, we also saw what happened to Michonne's horse. Sadly, it has now gone off to the great stables in the sky, where it can commiserate with Rick's trusty steed from the pilot about the injustice of life as a horse in the zombie apocalypse.
