The Walking Dead Season 4: 7 Huge Contrivances That Led To Great Scenes

4. Daryl Crashes A Car (4.3, "Isolation")

After the infection begins to spread among the wider population of the prison, Daryl takes Michonne, Tyreese, and Bob on a road trip to raid a veterinary college for drugs to treat the sick. After a brief heart-to-heart with Michonne leaves an awkward silence in the car, Daryl disobeys the rules of the road and turns his attention to the stereo system, instructing shotgun Michonne to find him a CD. As he fiddles with the dials, he happens upon a garbled radio broadcast. "Those who arrive, survive," says the voice. Daryl and the others are so floored by the message that none of them can tear their eyes away from the radio. Unfortunately, Daryl also cannot tear his foot away from the gas pedal, and he pulls a Lori by plowing into a Walker. He recovers better than the late Lori Grimes, managing to not actually flip the car onto the side of the road, but he also discovers that he did not exactly hit the only zombie around them for miles. The camera pans up over the frightened survivors, and we see that they had driven straight into a herd of massive Walkers...and the car is already being swarmed. Dun dun dun! Zombie herds are never not cool. It is known. Ever since the first appearance in the premiere of Season 2, a zombie herd has always marked the beginning of a scene that is sure to be thrilling. This was the largest to be seen on the show so far, and the shot of hundreds of Walkers swarming the car was pretty darn scary. Plus, it gave us the chance to see why these people have managed to live for as long as they have in the zombie apocalypse. Daryl in particular shows some serious survival skills, keeping his head about him well enough to know that staying in the car for more than a few seconds after the car stalls would be a mistake. He knows that running out into a zombie herd was a better idea than waiting for the protection of the car to fail them. He knows that their best chance of making it to the veterinary college alive was to run for the woods and not look back. But he didn't know to keep his eyes on the road? Really? Daryl?
