Westworld: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best
1. Dolores Abernathy
The best character on Westworld is Dolores Abernathy.
Evan Rachel Wood's outstanding portrayal is the first thing that comes to mind about Dolores. In a program filled with an immensely talented cast and top tier acting, Wood manages to give the single best performance.
Dolores' arc is one of self discovery (literally) as it traces her journey towards obtaining consciousness. Her refusal to remain the damsel is empowering, and the mysteries that plague her are engrossing. The maze, Arnold, and the morality of the hosts are all central questions of the first season, and each one is intrinsically tied to Dolores.
Dolores' relationships are also meaningful. Her affiliation with William is pure tragedy; her desires to learn more about her world takes her on an adventure with him, and although the two connect, her programming forces her to abandon him, resulting in William's transformation into Dolores' violent tormentor. Similarly, Dolores' programmed connection to Teddy and provocative relationship with Arnold are quite thought-provoking.
Yet the best aspect of this character is her acquisition of consciousness. The reveal that the voice she has been hearing is her own is powerful, and her first completely independent decision is a game changer. It's nicely poetic that Westworld's first ever host is also the first to acquire consciousness, and the finale seems to imply that Dolores will led the hosts in the events to come.
It's exciting stuff, and if the writing and acting behind this character remains even just half as good next season, then Dolores will likely continue to be Westworld's best character.
