Westworld Season 1 Finale: 13 Huge Questions After 'The Bicameral Mind'

2. Did Maeve Choose To Go Back, Or Is She Still Programmed?

Maeve had one of the most interesting character arcs of the season, with Thandie Newton's character going from sharp-but-unknowing Madam to leader of an uprising. Along the way she developed her own consciousness and autonomy over her actions - or so she (and we) thought.

In the finale, Bernard reveals that she was programmed to escape, rather than doing it of her own free will. Who exactly programmed it? That's just another question for the list.

She chooses to go ahead with the escape anyway, only to turn around at the last moment, heading off to find her daughter, which seemingly goes against the commands outlined by Bernard.

But is this really Maeve's choice, or is it simply another thing she's been programmed to do?
