In The Comics

In the comics, Mom is a fairly brief character, appearing in the second issue. She appears to be a partially alive, sentient plastic mannequin with some organic tissue. Little information is given as to her origins, but they don't look very nice.

Her image is clearly modelled on a 1950s housewife. At least until her clothes are removed, then it's all hellish.

Played by Jordan Clare Robbins as a sort of Stepford Wives perfect image of the mother and housewife, Mom (otherwise known as Grace Hargreeces) is a much more complete android. She's also a lot more like an actual mother to the Academy, particularly Diego.

Gerard Way revealed that her redesign in the show was down to Steve Blackman:

“Steve [Blackman] added a lot to the character of Mom. here is actually a lot we’re gonna get out of her in the comics. She does have a tremendous amount of backstory. But we still haven’t seen a whole lot of that. We’re gonna start to see more of her backstory, but a lot of that for the show came from Steve. He really fleshed her out.”
