Why FlashForward Shouldn't Have Been Cancelled
3. Sharp Plotting
Many programmes with overarching storylines fall victim to the problem of bloated or meandering plots.
FlashForward comfortably avoided this trap, maintaining a narrative that was both intricate and easy to understand throughout its run. It managed to make juggling several storylines at once look simple, and each of the narrative threads was intelligently structured and brilliantly engaging.
Whether it was following an FBI agent’s efforts to prevent his own murder or a desperate father’s attempt to be reunited with his daughter, FlashForward rarely failed to be riveting.
Special mention must go to the show’s plot twists. FlashForward had a habit of ending episodes with unforgettable reveals or jaw-dropping climaxes that sent the story in thrilling new directions and gave fans plenty of incentive to come back for more. From shocking deaths to a mind-blowing discovery on an ancient video cassette, FlashForward’s twists were nothing short of astounding.
Perhaps the plot would have ultimately collapsed in on itself had the series been renewed; such things aren’t unheard of, even among great shows (just compare the early days of The X-Files' mytharc to the convoluted mess it became). But given how well-crafted FlashForward’s solitary season was, the writers undeniably deserved a chance to move forward with their story.
