Why FlashForward Shouldn't Have Been Cancelled

1. Cliffhanger Ending

Even when a series doesn’t get the run it deserves, it can still provide some closure to its audience. Take the case of Jericho, which was renewed for a second season after a determined fan campaign.

Although they’d been given a reprieve, Jericho’s writers were aware that the threat of cancellation hadn’t gone away, and they made sure that the Season Two finale brought the story to a satisfactory close. FlashForward’s fans had no such comfort.

The show finished with a massive cliffhanger, which completely changed the game and placed two characters in extreme danger.

Instead of getting resolution, anyone who’d invested in FlashForward was left with burning questions. The programme had been based on a novel, but to say that the similarities between them were few would be an understatement.

Despite the show’s quality and the nature of its ending, no form of closure was provided. Even if there hadn’t been another full season, a film or abbreviated season could have wrapped up the loose ends and enabled fans to say goodbye to their beloved characters properly, as was the case for Firefly and Person of Interest.

As it’s been over a decade since FlashForward’s “ending”, it’s highly unlikely that the series will ever return. However, a glimmer of hope remains for faithful fans. The stories of other cancelled shows, such as Doctor Who, were continued in different media like audio dramas and comics.

Perhaps there’s still a possible future where FlashForward finally gets the ending it needs.
