Warning: This review contains spoilers. In €œPerspective,€ Ryan goes to therapy to better understand his issues with his father. This episode was focused tightly on Wilfred and Ryan, with no appearances from Anne, Jenna, or Kristen. It was a more serious episode, but it still maintained its comedic elements€”through Wilfred, of course. In the beginning of the episode, when Ryan is seeing his therapist, Wilfred comes in and talks about his €œproblems,€ too. The back and forth between Ryan and Wilfred is amusing enough, but it leaves something to be desired. Thankfully, the rest of the episode doesn€™t disappoint. Wilfred continues to be amusing, time after time, with his €œbelly-smacking bat,€ his ATW (Always Trust Wilfred) bracelet, his tape-recording of himself (€œOf course I€™ve been listening to you this entire time!€), and his disturbing imitation of Claire from the Breakfast Club€”gotta love that blood lipstick. We learn Ryan€™s trauma with his father spawns from his reaction€”or lack thereof€”to sending Ryan€™s mother to a mental institution. In other words, Ryan was upset because his father was not. In Wilfred€™s story about burying a skull and digging it up later, only to find it was a toy, he tells Ryan, €œThings we bury in the past are sometimes not as upsetting as we remember them.€ In the end, Wilfred seems to be right. It turns out Ryan€™s father did cry, after he sent his children out of his office. However, I can€™t help but have a suspicion that it wasn€™t tears, but laughter. After all, since when does Wilfred ever tell the complete truth? We also see a return to Ryan€™s childhood drawing of Wilfred and, going back to the time Ryan drew it, we meet Spotted-Wilfred. Spotted-Wilfred provided more comedic relief. Wilfred€™s opposite, he possesses a NTW bracelet (Never Trust Wilfred). With how things have been going so far, the NTW bracelet is the one Ryan should wear. Spotted-Wilfred€™s alien spaceship seemed like the show being lazy, trying to explain Wilfred in the worst way possible, but of course, the show never gives us straight answers. It was just Wilfred being Wilfred€”or rather, Spotted-Wilfred being Spotted-Wilfred. Just when we think we€™re getting answers, we get more questions, but more questions are definitely better than a bad answer. As always, the show refuses to give us any real answers about Wilfred, but we do get some about Ryan€™s father, and it seems that Ryan€™s troubles with his father are over, for now.
