Wimbledon 3D - Coming to a Cinema Near You
Coming to a cinema near you - High-definition 3D tennis. Starting July 1st, the Wimbledon tennis championships will be filmed and broadcast to the world in 3D, thanks to a partnership with Sony. Showcase, Odeon and Cineworld are amongst the cinema chains who will be covering Wimbledon this coming weekend. The matches will include the Men's Singles Semi-Finals and Final, as well as the Women's Final - complete with surround sound grunting. Although not the biggest fan of 3D use in films, due to the way it seemingly darkens the whole production... sport is an entirely different beast. Having witnessed three football matches, and caught a few holes of the recent 3D golf coverage, I can testify to it being a truly immersive and visually stunning experience. Action replays from lower-positioned cameras are particularly impressive - with unbelievable depth and clarity. It was a bit like watching HD for the first time 5 years ago, only 5x better. The smaller confides of a tennis court should make for ideal 3D viewing - although quite how the bulky 3D equipment will squeeze into Centre Court is another matter! Sony have put together the following video to present their coverage. It features Maria Sharapova, which is the pretty much only excuse you should need to give it a watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LTeVUt10Yw No word yet as to whether local multiplexes will be offering up strawberries and cream - though even if they do, one can expect a heftier price tag than you'd find at Wimbledon.
