On the 10th of September 1993, Fox took a punt on something a little bit out of the ordinary. Not conforming to any real or conventional sense of television programming, and hoping only that there was an itch that Twin Peaks hadn't fully scratched, they premiered the first-ever episode of The X-Files. Starring relative newcomers David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson (neither of whom the network felt were actually big enough names to helm the show) they embarked on their tales of mystery, intrigue and the paranormal.
26 years removed and the show is still seen as one of the greatest series in television history, and arguably the most critically successful science fiction drama of all time. Mulder and Scully endure as pop culture icons, and its influence is apparent throughout virtually every supernatural show that's followed in its wake.
