Who knew that a series that brought back 80's nostalgia would have been so enthralling?
On paper, Cobra Kai is not the best idea in the world, a series based around the adult life of the original teenage stars of The Karate Kid just doesn't sound like a recipe for success.
However, YouTube really believed in the concept and gave Cobra Kai a shot on their YouTube Originals service. Critically, you never expected Cobra Kai to be as well written, well-acted, and nicely balanced as it is - but somehow it ignored all the naysayers and doubters to become an acclaimed comedy-drama that is arguably better than all the films, barring the first, were.
It has retained the original's heart of gold, along with leaning into the sense of over-zealous action mixed with cheesy dialogue, and that is why Cobra Kai is great. It is such a self-aware series that plays on the concept of modernising nostalgia for a new audience, whilst also not forgetting its roots - no matter how bonkers they eventually became.
It's hard then not to like Cobra Kai - and seeing Johnny Lawrence alongside Daniel LaRusso as adults has been such an interesting ride for those that can remember the original films.
