It may come as a surprise that a chess-based miniseries which spends lengthy sequences extolling the virtues of the Sicilian Defence became the most-watched scripted miniseries on Netflix, but that is exactly what happened upon the fourth week of The Queen's Gambit release.
As soon as it arrived on the streaming platform, the Scott Frank directed drama was met with widespread acclaim. The combination of its stylish cinematography, carefully realised historical detail and Anya Taylor-Joy's brilliantly restrained performance as protagonist Beth Harmon culminated in the creation of something very special which gained die-hard fans across the globe and encouraged people far and wide to dust off their chess boards and learn to play.
