13. The Gusev Crater Is Real

There's so much sci-fi jargon in Doctor Who that, when the show does include stuff that actually exists, it can be easy to miss it.

One such example is the Gusev Crater, the location of Bowie Base One in The Waters of Mars. While that sounds like a word that could easily have been made up by one of the writers, it's actually a real feature of our red galactic neighbour.

It was named after Russian astronomer Matvey Gusev in 1976 and is approximately 90 miles wide, and was supposedly formed three to four billion years ago.

Hopefully it's not actually harbouring a deadly, soggy virus.
