According to accounts from Bruce Prichard, both Vince McMahon and Vince Russo were swept off their feet by Rena Mero's gorgeous good looks in 1996. They'd been caught off-guard when Marc Mero brought his wife to contract negotiation meetings with him, and they were tripping over themselves to offer Rena a deal too.

She accepted, and Sable was born.

It didn't take long for her to outshine her husband and steal Marc's thunder. Fans loved Sable's natural presence, affinity for leather catsuits, and sex appeal. By the time 'New Generation' wholesomeness gave way to Attitude era raunch, she was a superstar who pushed the envelope in increasingly skimpy outfits.

During that first run with WWE, Sable outgrew her role as Mero's valet, posed for Playboy and became one of the top stars in the entire promotion. Meanwhile, Marc faded into the background and couldn't match his wife's connection to the audience.

Sable, almost accidentally, became a female icon when she was only accompanying her husband to a meeting.
