3. Edge, Lita And Matt Hardy
Arguably, the most famous sex scandal of the 2000s was one of the first real instances of WWE getting their comeuppance from the Internet Wrestling Community.
The story goes that, while Matt Hardy was out dealing with an injury, Lita began an affair with Edge after they started travelling together and grew rather fond of one another. Allegedly, one thing led to another, which then in turn led to the pair having a ton of heat backstage.
Understandably, when Hardy found out about the affair he went ballistic, sending out a series of posts on the internet in order to humiliate his colleagues.
The heat on Edge and Lita intensified when Hardy was released from the company. This saw the birth of "we want Matt" chants at WWE events whenever the Rated R Superstar was in the ring, despite the fact there had been no acknowledgement on television as to what had happened. Yes, we'd all grown smart by 2005.
Due to the fans' perseverance, WWE were forced to rehire Matt before firing him out of the proverbial cannon and into the most realistic WWE storylines of the modern era, as the affair and its aftermath were brought into the ring.
