10 Alternative Takes On Hated Wrestling Moments
9. The Tower Of Doom Cage Match From WCW Uncensored 1996
The dumbest match in the history of professional wrestling exists today as a symbol of WCW's pre-New World Order malaise, a ludicrous subversion of the very essence of the art form - but it is the very best so-bad-it's-good bout ever presented.
For the uninitiated:
Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage battled eight heel foes ("The Alliance To End Hulkamania) in a triple decker "Tower Of Doom" cage positioned by the entrance ramp in a scene more befitting a side-scrolling beat-em-up than an exhibition of professional wrestling. Grasping the punchline, Arn Anderson dressed up like a ninja from Double Dragon. Hogan and Savage, with the help of trusty talcum powder, made it past the first level before handily swatting away Meng and casually attempting to murder Kevin Sullivan.
Then, for no reason whatsoever, Hogan and Savage elected to take the fight to the actual ring - really, nobody knew what was going on - before grotesque non-wrestling juice merchants Z-Gangsta and the Ultimate Solution were installed as final bosses ahead of decorated wrestling royalty. Lex Luger botched a missed punch (!). Ed Leslie won the day with some frying pans. End scene.
There's a lesson to learn from it in this histrionic age of pushes and burials and panics - Ric Flair was embarrassed but not stigmatised. Your favourite wrestler is probably going to be alright.
