The 2008 edition of the Rumble is best remembered for John Cena’s return from injury (months ahead of schedule) and the opening salvo featuring Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, unsurprisingly great. This is all sensible wrestling booking, the kind of logical, competent storytelling that keeps things ticking along.

Much more fun, though, is the sight of Jimmy Snuka and Roddy Piper, both old as the hills, making surprise appearances at Madison Square Garden with the sole purpose of renewing a decades-old rivalry.

The pair, true ‘80s megastars, had a white hot feud way back when which concluded with the faux-Scotsman smashing a coconut on Superfly’s head. Despite the time past, the two haven’t cooled off a bit, and they go at it in the middle of the ring while everyone else just lets them get on with it (CM Punk, in particular, sits in the corner just beaming. He can’t believe his luck).

The aged pair are smartly only given a short while in which to muck about before perennial spoilsport Kane hoiks them both over the top rope. It’s the kind of nonsense that makes long term fandom feel a good life choice.
