10 Amazing WCW Starrcade Moments WWE Should Take Inspiration From
5. Ladder Of Success
One of WCW's last truly great matches, the ladder match between Chris Benoit and a reinvigorated Jeff Jarrett stole the show on the uneven 1999 supercard.
The newly-christened 'Chosen One' hadn't exactly had a charmed start to life in WCW despite his much-publicised 'Stroke' alongside new gaffer Vince Russo. Similarly frustrated but headed in the opposite direction, Chris Benoit was just about at breaking point with the Atlanta group, preparing to exit alongside Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko and Eddie Guerrero less than a month after this choice war.
Already carrying a weight of expectation thanks to their vast experience, the two were forced to follow the legendary tag team ladder match between Edge, Christian and The Hardy Boyz from October's No Mercy that was still the talk of the industry.
The pair's technical prowess and the physical toughness of Benoit in particular subsequently helped deliver a spectacular effort that would almost salvage the status of the United States title before Vince Russo's booking savaged every major title in 2000. A selection of brutal ladder spots that put the 'Crippler' in tortuous agony still weren't enough to subdue the Canadian star, nor was the terrifying diving headbutt he nailed on Jarrett shortly before re-scaling the ladder en route to victory.
