10 Awesome Gimmicks Wasted On Terrible Wrestlers
3. Sable
Sable was so incredibly sexy that it is often forgotten just how awesome her character was.
Originally a valet in the same vein as Miss Elizabeth, she accompanied real life husband "Wildman" Marc Mero to the ring. When he went down with a knee injury, she remained a fixture on WWE television, gaining a fan following that suddenly had her atop the wrestling world, one of its most popular stars. Mero, now known as "Marvelous," was jealous of his manager's success and began belittling her on a weekly basis.
Sable generated a great deal of sympathy but, at the same time, would not allow herself to be degraded by a man. Eventually, she stood up for herself, breaking free of the oppressive rule of the former intercontinental champion. She even dropped him with a Sable Bomb in a moment that drew an enormous pop.
Now a star on the level of Steve Austin, Sable became a mainstream celebrity and one of the must-see performers of WWE's Attitude Era. The blonde bombshell was riding a tidal wave of momentum until management decided to resurrect the Women's Championship and make her the centerpiece of the new division.
While she had been extraordinary in a few mixed tag team matches in which her male counterparts could carry the action until she entered the ring and hit a few signature moves, there was no man to hide behind. As a more traditional in-ring performer, her weaknesses were exposed and it became abundantly clear just how bad a professional wrestler Sable actually was.
A sure-fire Hall of Famer thanks to her numerous contributions to WWE during its most popular era, her place in history is preserved, as is her reputation as one of the worst wrestlers to ever be handed an awesome, strong, independent character.
