10 Awesome Ideas WWE Suddenly Stopped Doing
9. The Intercontinental Cup
Everyone loves a good wrestling tournament, and more so, everyone loves when a secondary belt is given a feeling of prestige. The Intercontinental Cup had the potential to achieve both of these in one go and could even have led to seeing more mid-card talent on TV. But, it made like a magician and completely vanished.
The Intercontinental Cup was advertised in 2013 as part of the Main Event television programme for Ion TV. It was advertised for a week, promising to include the likes of Kofi Kingston, Randy Orton, Dolph Ziggler, and more, with the winner getting a shot at Wade Barrett's Intercontinental Championship.
It was a perfect idea as it gave some purpose to the show and could give Barrett a great new opponent. However, Main Event came and went without any sign of the tournament. It was ultimately cut before it could begin, with WWE beginning a programme between Barrett and Bo Dallas instead - yeah, because that worked out so much better.
The company attempted to bring kayfabe into the Cup's sudden cancellation, with Barrett claiming he had convinced management to cancel the event in a Tweet. If heels could really cancel number-one contender tournaments just like that, then there'd be no hope for anybody.
