10 Awesome WWE "Nearly Moments"
1. Lesnar Holds Firm
You don't often see 60-minute Iron Man matches taking place on a run-of-the-mill episode of SmackDown, but then you also don't often see feuds as intense and all-consuming as the one waged between Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar throughout most of 2003. The pair had already squared off at WrestleMania and SummerSlam, and with one win a piece, an all-out war (in wrestling terms, obviously) was truly the only way for them to fully settle the score.
And after Lesnar ran up a big lead - thanks, in no small part, to his use of an illegal foreign object (namely, a steel chair) - the Olympic gold medalist faced a race against time to bring the score back to parity, and thereby retain his WWE Championship. The match - perfectly booked, perfectly timed (even the obligatory TV commercial breaks seemed to be well-utilised) - came down to its final few seconds, with a desperate Kurt Angle trapping his opponent in a vice-like Ankle Lock. Alas, Lesnar held out, and Angle only just won.
