10 Awful WWE Match Finishes That Ruined Everything
8. Lex Luger vs. Yokozuna (Summerslam 1993)
A legendarily foolish finish to a much-anticipated bout, Summerslam 1993’s main event saw the US patriot Lex Luger (sounds suspiciously German to us, but there you go) take on the WWF champion Yokozuna, a foreign monster heel of the old school.
After some lacklustre, disjointed wrestling that frankly failed to even attempt to set the world on fire, the American hero hit his huge forearm smash and knocked the big guy out of the ring. And that was it. Yokozuna was counted out, so Luger won… but he wouldn’t win the title on a count-out victory.
Nonetheless, that didn’t stop the babyfaces emptying out the locker room to congratulate Luger. With Lex raised to their shoulders, the American flag made an appearance, followed by clouds of red, white and blue balloons. Fans in attendance were left horribly confused. The celebration indicated that Luger had won the title… but clearly he had not. It got worse – fans at home were then treated to an emotional, highly charged montage tribute video to Luger, who (as near as anyone could make out) had just had the lamest victory of all time fall into his lap.
The story of the match was one of patriotism versus the evil foreign devil, and Luger was billed as having only one shot at the title. Summerslam saw his shot come, and saw him fail to secure the title. Why the celebration? Possibly to divert viewers from what had actually happened, and send the live crowd home happy? Who knows?
