10 Best ECW Champions Ever

6. Sabu

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1LOJnaJ_jM The homicidal, suicidal, genocidal Sabu really introduced the world of professional wrestling to what extreme would become. He was diving off the ropes and crashing through tables long before it became a staple of hardcore wrestling. An innovator and risk taker the likes of which the industry had never seen, he was as instrumental in attracting the attention of fans. To say that Sabu's championship reigns were born of unusual circumstances would be an understatement. The maniacal star's first heavyweight championship came in a Dream Partner Tag Match. During that contest, he defeated Terry Funk to not only win the company's top prize but also become the first star to hold both the ECW and Television Championships at the same time. It was incredibly rare for a wrestler to win singles titles in tag team action and, while that would become more common during the late '90s wrestling boom, it was a major part of setting ECW apart from the other promotions. Sabu's second championship reign began on August 9, 1997. That night, dubbed "Born To Be Wired," would go down in the company's brief history as one of the most violent and nauseating in wrestling history. In a Barbed Wire match, Sabu and Funk would roll around in the razor sharp wire, their skin ripping and shredding as they became entangled in it. They would need to be cut out of the mangled mess but by night's end, the nephew of the original Sheik would regain the title. In hindsight, it is a shame that Sabu was not allowed the opportunity to win the title in a more traditional manner. One of the cornerstones of ECW, his title reigns will always be viewed as somewhat lackluster, even if the man behind the belt was anything but.
