10 Best Ever Reasons For Wrestling Storyline Exits
3. The Redemption Of Randy Savage
Something more than a tear-jerking babyface turn, this was something rarer, more euphoric than that: it was Randy Savage's happy ending.
Viewed through today's dreaded optics - the optics which, if cited, will get you Mike Kenellis'd quicker than an hilariously spiteful RAW segment - it's an...old-fashioned tale of redemption. No matter how much of an ego-driven, callous bastard you are, if the woman you left behind simply shows an unwavering loyalty, you can at your own convenience use that love as inspiration to better yourself, as if that love is for your benefit alone.
All that said, WrestleMania VII's grand moment remains an earnestly beautiful thing, all these years and the knowledge gained of Savage's unpleasant behaviour later. It works because, and this helps, Miss Elizabeth's performance was so powerful. She was the purest of babyfaces in role and execution; when she collapsed in tears, it was because those two torturous years of pain and loyalty made it so difficult to hold herself together. Savage only became the worst version of himself because he wasn't the same man without her love, even if he warped his own psyche to an extent that he denied it. He just needed a little time, is all.
Dated but also timeless, we are all that ugly-crying kid with the Ultimate Warrior buddy toy.
