It was from the ashes of tragedy that the opportunity to crown a new Universal Champion arose in mid-2016 (OK, that might be a touch dramatic - but Finn Bálor's ill-timed injury still rankles a bit).

Of the four contenders, it seemed like three of them had a decent chance of winning.

Seth Rollins was the man beaten by Finn at SummerSlam a week prior, Roman Reigns was Roman Reigns, and Kevin Owens - the eventual winner - was beginning to gather momentum, having emerged from his feud with Sami Zayn looking like a million bucks.

The only outside chance was Big Cass, but the predictability of his elimination was offset by the surprise of Triple H turning on Rollins, and helping KO to victory. It was a brilliant moment, and the subsequent feud between HHH and his former protege was only slightly disappointing.
