It is fairly telling that Jeff Hardy's two best singles matches to date (by my estimation at least) have been gimmick matches. It is the ladder match that really catapulted Jeff and his broken brother Matt into the consciousness of the public, and it is the ladder match that produced the Charismatic Enigma's finest performance. Well, up until now anyway.

It should have been a career-defining performance, but it would prove to be Hardy's last real hurrah in the company before heading off into the sunset and a few years of issues with TNA. What this match did do was make Punk a star, at least for the time being. The Chicago star was ruthless throughout, looking like the top level heel he would eventually become.

Hardy lost after falling off big things, because that is pretty much how great Jeff Hardy matches ended. The guy simply didn't win often, but it didn't really matter. Jeff was about performance, not about wins and losses.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
