10 Best NJPW Matches Of The Year

5. Okada Vs. Tanahashi (G1 Climax Day 17)

Wrestle Kingdom 7
NJPW.co.jp

This could go down as one of the best matches to end in a draw in wrestling history.

Perhaps the most storied rivalry of the past decade, Okada and Tanahashi are usually main-eventing a Tokyo Dome show when the two of them square off. This time however the stakes were just as high. Had either of them emerged victorious they would have been in the final of the G1 tournament with a chance of going on to main event yet another Wrestle Kingdom. The stakes, the performers, the rivalry, all had the crowd as animated as they have been all year and we were all glued to their every move for the entire 30 minutes.

There were throwbacks to previous encounters between the two as well as new wrinkles thrown in, and the closing sequence painted the perfect picture of two wrestling titans refusing to be seen as inferior to the other. It might be overshadowed by their earlier encounter from this year, but this should absolutely not be overlooked in the illustrious history of Okada vs Tanahashi.
