As the Attitude Era functionally came to an end in the spring of 2001, its demise coincided with a sudden burst of unvarnished pro wrestling on the weekly TV shows. The likes of Austin, Angle, Benoit, Triple H, and Chris Jericho turned Raw and SmackDown into havens for a much more unprocessed slate of action.

It was in Benoit's stated hometown of Edmonton that he and Austin tore the house down with as hard hitting a match as possible, without resorting to using the common weaponry of the era. By Austin's recollection, he and Benoit called most of the match inside the ring, with little more than the ten rolling German suplexes planned ahead of time.

Austin would also assert that the program had gotten so hot that he and Benoit could've worked a lighter match and reached the desired effect. Instead, he was adamant that he give Benoit the best match possible to not only help build Benoit's star, but to sustain his heel momentum by beating Benoit in front of his home crowd.
