Both Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa spent years on the independent circuit, making a reputation for themselves as two of the scene's best workers. Though both men had made occasional WWE appearances, it was considered a given that they were simply too small to make it in the company. That was okay - they were doing well where they were.

By 2015, though, WWE's paradigm had shifted. Gargano and Ciampa got a shot, and while they weren't signed to full contracts straight off the bat, NXT's hardcore fanbase gave the two respected veterans a warm welcome. As they racked up relatively even win/loss records, they outperformed their opponents both in the ring and in terms of reaction.

In 2016, the newly-named Team DIY signed up with WWE full time and entered into a feud with NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival. Though they fell short of claiming the titles at TakeOver: Brooklyn II, a two-out-of-three-falls rematch at the Toronto show saw to it that the unlikely superstars were now deserving champs.
