10 Best WrestleMania Rematches That Ever Happened At Backlash
1. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock (Backlash 1999)
The first entry in the trilogy of Stone Cold Steve Austin-Rock WrestleMania matches had been the main event of WrestleMania XV and was easily the best match on a very weak show. It was fitting then that the main event of the first ever Backlash would be a rematch from the Showcase of the Immortals. It would also prove to be a better match than its 'Mania equivalent.
A wild, Attitude Era-style brawl that went all over the arena and featured shenanigans involving special referee Shane McMahon and a briefly babyface Vince McMahon, the match also featured several inventive spots. The most notable of these saw the Rock take control of a camera as he talked trash on top of the announce table, only for Austin to appear in frame, show the Great One the middle fingers and then drop him with a Stone Cold Stunner, with the Rock all the while keeping hold of the camera.
The highlight of the first ever Backlash, this is the forgotten gem in one of the most celebrated rivalries in wrestling history and still the greatest WrestleMania rematch in Backlash history, being an undeniable improvement on the original. Several more matches have the opportunity to take that accolade at WrestleMania Backlash this year, but they have a high bar to beat.
